I was born and raised in the port city of Alexandria, Egypt, founded in 332 B.C. by Alexander the Great. In my youth the public schools did not support art classes for young kids as art was considered a luxury, but my love of art moved me to pursue it on my own. I immigrated to the USA in 1985 and settled in New York. There I pursued a college degree in commercial art, and worked for Hallmarks Nameplates of Farmingdale, NY. I enjoyed mixing ink for the silkscreen presses for new runs, and matching the colors to the original runs. I soon became known for doing so with great accuracy.

After two years at the silkscreen company I saw an opportunity to work at that largest newspaper in the Tampa Bay, FL, area. There I was a graphic artist, designing customers’ ads and newspaper layouts. While working at the newspaper I started my own graphic arts and marketing business. I worked on corporate I.D.s, publications, advertisements, marketing materials, and outdoor and indoor signage designs. This experience sharpened my eye for detail, but also taught me to work under extreme deadlines.

With the introduction of Mac computers in the 1990s, artists gradually began transitioning from drawing and painting to computer-generated images. I followed that trend and became adept in the use of computers for my graphic arts projects.

Inspired by the beautiful work of the members of the CPSA (Colored Pencil Society of America), I decided to try it and have spent countless hours and days teaching myself this unique and beautiful art medium. I was hooked immediately and joined the CPSA in February of 2017. In the past I have tried many artistic mediums, but found that I loved the versatility, precision, and flexibility of colored pencil. It allows me to achieve practically any desired effect. I find that working in colored pencil relaxes and quiets my overworked brain, significantly lessens my stress, and helps me to stay focused. My art reveals my fascination with natural and cultural matters, and appreciation of the basic elements of art and life.
