I suppose I am a self-taught artist who seems to have been born with a need to draw.

I don't know exactly when I started drawing, but at the age of 5 my parents took me to London Zoo. During my Art lessons at school following that visit to the Zoo, I painted just about every animal I could remember. My teacher was so impressed that all my paintings were displayed around the school.

I spent my entire childhood drawing and painting animals, mainly horses, and every birthday and Christmas all I ever wanted was paper, pencils and paints.

At the age of 16 I was offered a place in an Art College in London, but foolishly I turned it down. I felt I needed to be working and earning. So I started an apprenticeship in hairdressing. I didn't like that and moved onto office work. My spare time was filled with my other passion of knitting & sewing.

40 years have now passed and I hadn't picked up a pencil in all that time.

I got made redundant 18 months ago, unable to find another job and plenty of time on my hands, I bought a set of Coloursoft pencils and started to draw again.

My husband had no idea that I could draw, it never came up. He was impressed with my efforts and has been encouraging me ever since. Last Christmas he bought me a set of Polychromos pencils.

I do a lot of work in graphite because I feel more comfortable with it. But I am pushing myself to develop skills with coloured pencils because I prefer a bit of colour in my work.

I have had a lot of compliments on my work so far, but I feel I still have a long way to go.
