Abigail Jones

I have recently re- discovered my love of art after a very long break. I studied fine art and art history at college but I didn't pursue art as a career, concentrating instead on raising my family. A few years ago I began sculpting with polymer clay, and had quite a successful run as a doll and portrait sculptor, but it wasn't until the Autumn of 2012 that I picked up my pencils again and began to draw. Once I'd started drawing again I couldn't believe I had let it go for so long! Art is my passion and I'm happiest when I'm immersed in a piece…it has been a challenge as I have young children so have to work in fits and starts, usually in the evenings after they are asleep, and as a result I'm not very prolific. I'm looking forward to a time when I can work uninterrupted, and in the daylight!

I love the definition of pencils, and portraiture is definitely my preferred subject. I have also worked with watercolours, acrylics, charcoal and pastels but it wasn't until I joined an art forum in June 2013 that I saw what can be achieved using coloured pencils for the first time. I was amazed that this medium had grown so much, in my college days it was unheard of as a fine art medium, but 20 years on the results that can be achieved with artist grade coloured pencils are truly astonishing! I immediately rushed out and bought myself a tin of Faber Castell Polychromos pencils and have been hooked ever since. They offer precision, vibrancy of colour and such ease of use that they are definitely my favourite medium. I use both Polychromos and Prismacolor premiers and I love them both, the Polychromos can be used for really fine detail, and I love the creamy texture of Prismacolors, especially for skin tones.


Leo was my 3rd cp drawing and depicts my own dog sitting in our garden on a glorious summer's day. I liked the odd perspective of the photo, he is a miniature dachshund with very short legs, which were completely hidden by the fan of his fur, and he cast an interesting shadow on the stool which highlighted the woven texture of the seat. There was a hint of rust on the cast iron legs of the stool which offered another interesting texture, and his silky fur had a lovely contrast of shine and shadow. I used both Prismacolor and Polychromos pencils on hot pressed watercolour paper, framed size 20" x 16"

Sweet is a portrait of my daughter Ruby. I saw the ref photo of the bowl of sweets, imagined my daughter deliberating over them, and the idea was born. I had her pose over an empty bowl and told her to imagine she was choosing a sweet from the bowl, and to pretend she wasn't supposed to take one! I liked the mischievous expression on her face, and the way the rich wood complemented her dark hair. My favourite part to work on was her hair, I love drawing shiny hair! It was quite a challenge trying to combine two references, especially as I had to change the reflections in the glass to work with the wooden table and my daughter's green jumper instead of the original background. I used both Prismacolor and Polychromos pencils on hot pressed watercolour paper, framed size 20" x 16"

Autumn Leaves is one of my favourite pieces to date. This piece marked a real turning point for me, and it was during its creation that I really became passionate about coloured pencils. I enjoyed rendering all of the different textures in the leaves, water and mud, and I became slightly obsessed with water droplets!! Polychromos on Stonehenge, framed size 20" x 16"
